Hello, is anyone on this thread interested in playing Descent (2nd ed)? I have been thiking about buying the base game, and I am trying to put a group together

Hello wargamers! As it is too difficult to get the attention through this thread I decided to go around. I created a wargaming group on whatsapp for easier arrangements and flexibility if even outside LoB. If anyone wants to join please pms me. See this weekend Saturday is full, but I would love to play A Distant Plain which I just got this week.

Bought "Command and Colours: Napoleonics" and I already played it 9 times in the last 3 days! I like the game. The rules can be explained quite quickly; easy to understand but hard to master to become like Napoleon! It's a lot of fun (I know some of you have already played it in the past). It has already become my favourite wargame. Feel free to send me a personal message if you would like to arrange to play a game with me. These days I tend to come to LoB events frequently (weekdays and weekends).

Hey, trying to get COIN Liberty or Death (medium scenario) organized for LoB this Friday April 12th. We have 1 more spot left for someone if they can make it. It's at the bad moon cafe and we are aiming for a 1600 start.

Glad to hear of another COIN convert! Cuba Libre is also available at the moment, it just got reprinted so should still be in online stores. It's the lightest COIN but the smaller board with fewer spaces and everyone right on top of each other also has its own charm. I've still not played Falling Sky, would be up for a game at some point. Or I can bring Cuba Libre or Liberty or Death to a meetup. (LoD is closer to a team game. so I know not quite everyone's cup of tea compared to the more 1v1v1v1 games.)

Thanks for the game Riccardo! Surprisingly small game board, but never mind, it was a very tense and exciting play. The only thing is that I really need to read into the historical background to understand more of the four factions. I wish I'd been up to the task Caesar faced but due to not being him and other circumstances it was only veni, vidi without any vici.

Did I really write Arbarossa? Now I really know a lot about BtB, I am about to finish a Q&A with 400 questions, a factbook is in progress, but I really do not know which Sunday would be fine for me to have a real live game and not a solo one. Falling Sky news: I talked to Paul of BGGuru and he confirmed ordering more than a hundred copies, so cheer up! Also confirmed a large number of Sekigahara 3rd print due in the earliest October (time for me to save up, who knows how much it will cost).

Never played PoG so I cannot tell. I think it is harsh to say it's not worth to learn. I've had the game for a while and it looks pretty good, I just have a little problem to undestand a few rulebooks. I had the same issue with Labyrinth: War on Terror (which I sold in the end as I got tired of trying to get it clear in my head). However I had some progress now with BtB and I see its potential. I also have a look sometimes on BGG's forums and people there tend to like it.
Steve Oliver
Posted 5/1/16 8:33 PM
I have BtB and I've not fallen in love with it to be honest. While it seems a nice game, I don't feel the mechanics suit the flow of WW2, especially in the Eastern Front. PoG on the other hand IMO really seems to capture the feel of WW1, even if it does by some underhand mechanics. PoG remains my favourite wargame of all tme.
Zoltán
Posted 5/5/16 10:34 AM
I have managed to read the rules to and fro and solo playing on Vassal BtB. There are some bits still not clear but that's okay. Obviously to form an opinion I need to play it face to face with someone, however my first impressions are positive (possibly due to the factors that I am very much interested in WW2 (a lot more than the Great One), the East Front (thanks to the Socialist Block I grew up in) and that I have never played Paths of Glory. I browsed through the BtB forum on BGG and found the same declarations. I hope we can put this on the table some time. And the same goes for PoG which I read so much about that I am very curious about it.
Steve Oliver

Hi Zoltan. I'm free this Sunday if you wanted to try BtB or POG?
Riccardo Fabris
Posted 5/13/16 11:32 AM
I've played about 10 games of BtB and yeah, it just doesn't feel right to me. The premier WW2 CDG for me is Empire of the Sun, which is a masterpiece. With BtB you just get ahistorical rushes for the Urals which just feel wrong due to the harsh OOS rules.
Zoltán
Posted 5/14/16 12:09 PM
Steve, it is tempting but I am afraid I cannot make it this weekend, hopefully the next one. I learnt all the rules of BtB now I am processing all that information, then I will get into PoG and learn that too. Ricardo, by now I went through the rules, cards, also a few thousands posts of and on BtB and I can see your point. However to form my own opinion I need a few full plays. When it comes to historical accuracy it is not my real concern, then Twilight Struggle would be bad the same way too. I am not saying it is not important but I do not my rewriting history. So after this PoG and then I want to learn Empire of the Sun as you guys tend to praise this game a lot.

It's not so much historical accuracy, I'm a fan of rewriting history through games (I love triumph and tragedy, Totaler Krieg and unconditional surrender) but just some quite frankly ludicrous, gamey strategies that you can get away with in B2B.Steve, it is tempting but I am afraid I cannot make it this weekend, hopefully the next one. Guys, can anyone teach me WW2 Barbarossa to Berlin? I've had the game for a while but struggling to get the rules understood. (The rulebook to my standards is very poorly written, there is no index and longer explaining example plays are missing too. I understand it is probably to keep the page count low but I prefer important facts repeated to remind me while I am learning.) This game is very cool/interesting with a nice map board (like its big brother Paths of Glory from the same designer).

I've posted in the discussions of meetups on other days suggesting wargames, and there's not been much enthusiasm. With Quartermaster General, Game of Thrones and recently Forbidden Stars being very popular, I would expect lots of LOBsters to be interested in trying out wargames, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be the case: not sure if people are intimidated by some of the complex games? For the very big games table space is an issue on Saturdays and time similarly one on weeknights, but I think things like COIN games are accessible enough to play at most LOB meetups and I'd definitely be up for playing one on a Saturday or weeknight.

Good points, Andy. I have some speculations why this is the case. Maybe there's not been much enthusiasm in the weekdays because some war-gamers only check this thread and thus they didn't know about it. On the other hand, regular LoBers may think that war-games are way too complicated to try/understand them, and that wargamers don't accept newbies (or they may think that nobody is willing to explain the rules to them). Furthermore, this thread is quite big, and others may think that this is a closed-within-LoB group that doesn't accept others unless they have already played thousands of games. It looks like there are some of us willing to play on a Saturday or weeknight. Maybe in the past the trend was to only play wargames on Sundays (and war-games veterans still do) but LoB is having more and more members, wargames don't have to be Sunday-exclusive. --- apparently there should be some people (we are over 7,000 members now) who would be available to play war-games on Saturdays/weekdays. My suggestion is that the one who suggests a war-game may post both here and at the specific event's page as well. Informing people about it is they key-point. Maybe there've been others who checked this thread before and they thought "nobody plays on weekdays" and so they never check this thread again. Even if the first time we only have three of us playing a war-game on a week-day, eventually after some weeks we will have better numbers (even if that night there is just ONE new LoB member who likes wargames, he will see the game and he will come again to join). One should also be friendly and willing to meet new people.I've posted in the discussions of meetups on other days suggesting wargames, and there's not been much enthusiasm. True that about the Saturday venue. I think we could still give it a go, thought. Furthermore, I know that there has been a recent interest in having more BB meetings. Maybe the LoB leadership team will consider to have a Saturday-BB-meeting, once in a while.I've only ever been on a Sunday as all of the longer term veterans have told me that Saturdays venue is rather small and noisy but I'm flexible depending on where the majority of guys will be.

Thanks guys for the games of Virgin Queen and Liberty or Death yesterday, I had a great time. I've found one rules mistake I made with LoD: Patriot Militia do not count towards Rebellion Casualties, only cubes and forts. I think only one or two were killed if that, but it would have brought the French agonisingly close to the win.

I am around Sunday - situation could be a bit fluid - Zoltan wants to play Maria - which is a 3 player game. I would not mind giving it another go with him. But it also depends on how many others are around and what they want to do. I could bring Triumph and Tragedy and also Fire in The Lake and then perhaps we can just sort out games and players on the day. Might also bring VQ if enough people are around. Might also bring Twilight Struggle as 2 player back up. LIke I said - could be a bit fluid - but I'm sure we'll sort something out...So anyone around this Sunday?

I'll be in London for the first (and last) time in a while on Saturday 27th; anyone around? I've got rid of most of my multiplayer games as I don't get them played much any more, but I'm happy to play most things. CDGs, COIN, Maria/Friedrich etc. or maybe Pax Porfiriana or Pax Pamir - please just save me from having to play worker placement games all day! Could also potentially get some 2-player stuff played in the evening too.

Hi guys, I played MegaCiv with some of you a few weeks ago. Any chance you are thinking of playing again soon? I'd love a 2nd round on that beauty! Steve
Matt
Posted 2/16/16 4:44 PM
I'm up for playing that again sometime soon or even Virgin Queen again if the other Steve is around. I might head down this Sunday anyway and play some euro games if nothing 'Wargame-like' is on.
Steve Oliver
Posted 2/17/16 12:45 AM
Hi I'm very keen to get another game of Civ in - ideally I'd like to play once a month or so - although it is a bit of an undertaking to bring it in! I'll ping Simon and Bill an email - perhaps Sunday Feb 28th? This Sunday I could be up for something else - if Cedric and Ioannis (and others?) are around then we could have another crack at Virgin Queen. I also want to get Triumph and Tragedy on the table - that takes 3 players max though.

I'm in for either of the two so if we get more we can go for Virgin queen but if not Triumph and tragedy it is I guess

Hi guys, Keen to try Virgin Queen as well but can't make this Sunday. @Steve, Feb 28th I can make, if you fancy bringing Civ again count me in! Steve

I suggest we go with the quicker Tournament scenario which is 4 turns long. That would also encourage someone who wanted to try it for the first time.

Don't know... if we have 1st timers better to play full campaign, its easier in my opinion
Steve Oliver
Posted 2/6/16 10:24 AM
I agree it is a bit easier - although I would hope the more experienced players would be able to offer handy hints to the new players. I was thinking more of time - the last time we played a full campaign game was just before Xmas - we got to Turn 6 after 8-9 hours! If we are going to grab a new player from the boards then a quicker sharper Tournament scenario would be ideal.

Agree completely with Ioannis. Sunday is far better (German bar music aside). Saturday at the Frog is very loud and crowded. If Cedric is around we have enough for 4 and I can try others as well.

I'm probably going to be playing Twilight Struggle with Sami on Sunday so won't be organizing anything big for Sunday. Next weekend though (6/7) perhaps we can see if we have enough for Virgin Queen (or Here I Stand)? Who is around? So long as we finish in time for me to get home to watch the Superbowl! I also now have Triumph and Tragedy the game Ben recommended a while back. It's a 3 player so would be good to get that out of the box.

I might jump in then Steve to make it up to 5 players. What time was you thinking of starting?
Steve Oliver
Posted 1/20/16 5:46 PM
12 o'clock start - set up should not take too long. Understand if you would prefer to play Through the Ages though. Our game will take longer. Quite amusing that there are two ancient civ building games on at the same time! You can decide on the day if you would prefer.

Yea it seems a really active group! Through the ages looked fairly easy to play on the video I watched. I will take another look at the rules and game play of Mega Civ to see if I think I could pick it up with slowing you guys down too much.
Steve Oliver
Posted 1/20/16 10:46 PM
You would not be slowing us down - the rules for Civilization are straight forward and not complicated like say Virgin Queen. I'm keen to encourage new players to these games so don't be put off on that front at least!

Good to have you back Ioannis. I'm also not around this week. But next Sunday I was actually wondering if we could play Mega Civilization which I got last week. It's the brand new updated version. https://boardgamegeek... It's a faster version of what we have played before - some new rules with slicker mechanics, more balance etc with potentially up to 18 players (although I appreciate that is not going to happen!) and still doable in 6-7 hours if we play the standard "Short" game. My friend Simon is up for it, and we're trying to rustle up some more players between us. I know you didn't take to the old one Cedric too much on your first play - but can I tempt you back with new shiny board and rules? :)
Matt
Posted 1/18/16 12:41 PM
Hey guys I'm new to the group but would love to get involved with some board wargames although being a total newbie I only know Risk :S If people are will to teach I'd be interested in learning and playing with you. I watched a few youtube videos of Virgin Queen and US Civil war and both look fun albeit a little complicated!
Steve Oliver
Posted 1/18/16 11:38 PM
Hi Matt We're very happy to teach the rules for these games to you. Most of the board wargames we play tend to be longer and more involved then the average Eurogames that are played more commonly at LOB. But personally speaking at least I think the wargames are more rewarding. If you want to get stuck into any of the games that we play then just hang out here on this thread - we tend to organize from here. It's been a bit quiet the last few weeks, but that should change soon starting hopefully this weekend!

Hi Andy - good to hear from you again. Looks like you have a choice if you are planning on coming on Sunday. I'm trying to organize a game of Virgin Queen (or possibly Here I Stand the earlier Reformation version of VQ) so far we have I think 4 players - my friends Simon and Bill, Cedric and myself. You are welcome to join us. But if you are looking for US Civil War then Riccardo is around Sunday I believe and is looking for a game of that. I get the impression that 2 player games are more tolerated at LOB than they were previously so you two could play that. Either way hope to see you there.Hey all I should be free on Sunday - will know for sure tomorrow (Thurs) I have new GMT Civil War game if anyone fancies it??

They're not explicitly multiplayer, but there's very little stopping you from turning it into a map/team exercise, where you divide the front into areas of responsibility.
